Well, when I was 7, I was hit by a drunk driver on my bike, and that summer started a chain of events that has been unfolding throughout my life. I shattered my jaw, broke my kneecap, injured the top of my spine, broke 3 front teeth - permanent ones, of course, and obliterated the three little bones right at the base of the skull. I had chronic migraines ever since. Back then, people thought you were a slacker - I was told to suck it up and quit being a baby... um, I WAS a baby! My family was poor, so although I had my jaw wired in the ER, we weren't able to get the wires REMOVED for almost 6 months, which created all kinds of other problems.
It's not easy for a sensitive kid growing up with a disability like the migraines I've had. 20+ out of every 30 days, the pain was so bad, I was often getting sick or wanting to stay in bed, and as I got older, it just got worse. My teens and 20's were almost unbearable, and to top it off, I was living on my own from the time I was 12. Just surviving was hard enough. Eventually I got work with insurance benefits and started on the never ending round of doctors who gave me drugs that didn't help. I also had gotten very sick from malnutrition (living on my own wasn't something I was prepared for I guess) and at the age of 15 I was down to 72 pounds, then once I recovered, I blossomed to 240 in a very short time. So, in addition to migraines, nearsightedness and being a basic socially-inept geekette, I was fat. Oh, ya, and just a LITTLE bit stressed too!
I'm not one to sit and bemoan my fate. I tried every diet, read migraine articles, learned to be an herbalist and hypnotherapist, and tried to make things better. I discovered weird treatments for migraine that had to do with energy work and other things that doctors never told me about. I ate nothing but grapefruit until my mouth was full of canker sores, trying to lose weight. I worked out, I learned to dance, and things got... better. Not the migraines, but the other stuff. I finally found a food program that worked for me, and I got down to a size 4. I was performing professionally as a dancer and had drugs to manage my pain. Still, I tried Ayurveda, naturopathic medicine, everything I could find, and read every book on nutrition, health, healing... I just KNEW there had to be a way for me to feel better. Being in pain every day is just no kind of life.
Now at this point in my life I'm a Certified Holistic Health and Nutrition Practitioner and am certified in Yoga, Hypnosis, do EFT and NLP, have 5 years of personal counseling training and extensive experience with stress release and meditation, sleep improvement and natural herbal remedies. I've gone from being tormented by migraines to having none for several years, and I'm finally able to help others control and sometimes eliminate their pain and work better with their doctors. With all my experience in weight loss and other issues, I also work with lots of other directions. The one thing that brings me the most joy is helping others find their confidence or get out of pain. That is truly cool.
I still have my issues, but I'm doing great. I still dance, still teach yoga, still meditate, and I spend as much time as I can with my hubby and my fur-children. (I currently have 5 cats and a herd of raccoons!). Now that I have more of my life to work with every day, I've made it a personal mission to help as many others as I can, and I also donate a portion of all income to my animal charities - I've done that for as long as I can remember, and I will never stop. As I'm writing this, I have a 20 pound fur monster snoring next to me, belly up and snuggled in. Trust like that... that's priceless.
All my life I have wanted to help others, and I hope in some small way, I can help you as well.
